Blog Post: Talking with job seekers
posted Friday, April 25, 2008 5:59 PM
Last evening I had the pleasure of presenting to the Student Chapter of SHRM at the University of North Texas. We talked about job seeking tips and how to look for a job. One of these future HR professionals asked a great question: "What do you do if you don't have any experience - what do you put on your resume?"
My response was something like this - first, really look at what you have done. Especially if you are in college. What committees have you worked on? What projects have you done? Were any of those in a team environment? Have you been the treasurer of an organization, then that's financial management and budgeting. Plus, take into account any volunteer work you have done. If you wrote a report, how you communicate. All of this goes into experience. In addition, ask your friends and family to describe you. Use this information in your professional summary and then land that great job.
