Blog Post: What is the difference between a profession and an industry?
posted Friday, April 25, 2008 6:11 PM
This question came up recently in a presentation I was giving and I thought it might be a good idea to talk about it here.
First, your profession is the "what" you do. So for example, if you are in sales, that is your profession. If you work in the insurance business as an insurance sales person, your industry is insurance. Basically, the "who" you do it for. So when you are thinking about changing industries, make sure you focus on the skills of your profession. Focus on what you can do. Look and think about what skills transfer to different industries.
