Blog Post: Running Late?

posted Saturday, May 10, 2008 9:40 AM

Hi, this is Bill Kasko , President and CEO of Frontline Source Group, Inc. a temporary staffing and direct hire employment placement agency based in Dallas Fort Worth. Many of us, once in our life have been late to work. Whether the excuse is traffic, weather, getting your kids to school or the alarm clock didn’t go off. The crazy thing is that 43% of managers say that they don’t mind their employees being late as long as they get their work completed on time and with quality.

According to a survey done by Harris Interactive, 15% of employees say they are late to work once a week. On the same note 24% say they make up excuses for being late. A few of the excuses that were given as the craziest reasons for being tardy are:

·          I had to go on an audition to American Idol

·          My ex-husband stole my car so I couldn’t drive to work

·          I wasn’t thinking and accidently went to my old job

·          The line was to long at Starbucks this morning

·          I didn’t have money for gas and the pawn shops are closed

While these are funny excuses, sometimes it would be help an employee if they had more of a flexible schedule. While some jobs require a more “set schedule” others can be flexible. For a manager, if your employee tends to be tardy all the time you can do one of the following to help:

·          Discuss the tardiness with the employee, seeking the root cause. There could be a very good reason that this employee is late all the time, which could be fixed with a slight adjustment in their schedule.

·          Discuss how happy they are in their current role. Most people who are not happy with their current position tend to be less motivated to get to their job on time.

·          Evaluate your company’s current policies and consider trying flextime. When using flextime, it is usually best for managers to clearly define expectations and use measurements based on accomplishments and deadlines, rather than specific hours.

Although flexible schedules are more common in the workplace today, it is still important for employees to be mindful of their arrival times. Consistently showing up late can affect how others in the company view your work ethic and discipline as well as well as affect your productivity.
