Compared to last year, how do you think the local job market is performing? A survey that is being done on bizjournals.com shows as of 8:58 a.m. Friday morning only 13% of those surveyed say that the market is better and 22% say it is the same. It is only expected, with the economy at an all time low, that 65% say it is worse.

With the talk of the economy crisis, it is understandable why 65% of people who answered this survey would believe that it is worse. I also think that it has to do with industry in which you work. For instance, if you are a software developer you work in a wide range of other industries. Software developers can work in healthcare, telecommunications, IT, staffing, corporate retail, etc.. Another factor is the state and city in which you live. For example, Houston , TX is rated number 1 in America ’s top 10 hottest job markets. Austin follows behind as number 2, and then Dallas sits at number 3. Statistically, Texas seems to be doing better than most in the United States , being that thousands of jobs are being added each month, rather than facing the losses that other states are. Florida seems to be one of the states being hit the hardest with foreclosures and unemployment. Many people from these “hard hit” states are moving elsewhere, like to Austin , Dallas , Houston and San Antonio to find jobs in their industries and to get paid what they are worth. There are plenty of great jobs out there; it’s just a matter of being resourceful and looking beyond areas that you may have considered in the past.

If you are feeling the effects of the economic “crisis” it is important to think “outside the box.” Being proactive will help you to find a position that you will be happy in. Like I have shared in blogs previously, think about networking…networking…networking! Also, don’t just rely on the internet, pick up the phone. The good news is there are still many jobs here in Texas and they are in a wide range of industries.
