Blog Post: In hard times, stay focused and confident!
posted Friday, May 15, 2009 10:11 AM
In a time when jobs are less plentiful and there is more competition for each one, it is even more important to stay focused on your goal. Even in these difficult times, we hear success stories on jobing.com, in the local workforce centers and from individuals who have obtained employment. How are they finding jobs in this market?
1. Don't neglect your network. This can be anyone. Former co-workers, neighbors and everyone you come into contact with may be a valuable resource in your search. 2. Stay positive. Successful employees bring a positive attitude to the workplace and potential employers are looking for individuals with confidence and the ability to cope with difficult situations in a positive manner. 3. Check your resume. Make sure your format is simple and allows a hiring manager to quickly and easily determine your skills and strengths. 4. Keep your information up to date on jobing.com, workintexas.com and all internet job boards you use. 5. Include a short cover letter when submitting your resume indicating why you believe you are a good fit for the available position. 6. Be prepared. When called for an interview: research the company, take copies of your resume and any other supplemental documentation, dress to impress, smile, make eye contact and give a firm handshake. These basics are even more important now. 7. Schedule your job search activities. Treat your search for employment as your job and stick to a disciplined routine. Diligence pays off. 8. Stay focused on your strengths. Remember that you have a unique set of skills and experiences that are valuable assets that will benefit your future employer. The same resilience that helped you overcome previous challenges will serve you well as you continue your job search.
