Blog Post: What if you are overqualified for the position you are applying for?
posted Friday, June 5, 2009 2:25 PM
Do not dumb down your resume. A position that better suits you within the company may come up at a later time and you will not be taken as seriously if you apply for that position after dumbing down your resume for this position.
Emphasize the fact that you are looking to grow within the organization and are looking at this position as a stepping stone. Many employers are concerned that overqualified candidates will not stay with the organization very long. Explain your investment in their company. Explain your ability to help others in the department you are applying to. Your previous experience can be very valuable to others. Let the recruiter know that you are looking forward to learning how their company works within that department/area of expertise. While you have a hefty amount of experience, you will be learning so much from the new people and practices this organization has in place. Only include relevant experience on your resume. You do not want to overwhelm the recruiter. If you feel that you are not right for the position (after talking to the recruiter during the interview) ask the employer to consider you for other positions. Let them know that while the position is not the right fit, you feel the company is (which is why you applied in the first place). Community Comments
