Blog Post: There is no need to get so personal.

posted Sunday, February 17, 2008 6:31 PM

When you are interviewing with a potential employer there are some questions that are not really necessary to address. For example, if your marital status, religion, children, political position or family background are not questions that you are required to answer.

This can be handled by saying something along the lines of "I would prefer to keep the focus of our interview on my professional accomplishments". You can be tactful when re-directing the focus back to your professional abilities and away from topics too personal. It is ok to say no.

 Good Luck and Go Jobing.

Thank you for this article. I have excellent professional accomplishments, but I keep inevitably being asked if I have children. When they find out I have 3 boys, the demeanor of the interviewer completely changes and I the interview is immediately wrapped up. I'll learn to just say no to these questions.
