    Under the guidance and supervision of the CAO and Principals, the District Nurse is responsible for providing supplemental supervision and assistance to site based Clinic Aides in order to maximize efficiency and effectiveness in maintaining, evaluating, and interpreting cumulative health data to accommodate individual needs of students. The District Nurse collaborates with Clinic Aides, the Special Programs Department, Teachers, and other school personnel to strengthen and facilitate the educational process by improving and protecting the health status of students so they may achieve optimal physical, mental, emotional, and social growth and development.

    Duties
    ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES include, but are not limited to the following. Other duties may be assigned by the appropriate Principal.
    • In collaboration with site based Clinic Aides, the District Nurse monitors compliance of school health program with federal, state and local laws, regulations, and policies.
    • Function within the framework of the Texas Nurse Practice Act.
    • Screens and evaluates findings of deficits in vision, hearing, scoliosis, growth, etc.
    • Observes students for development and health patterns.
    • Records immunizations, health findings, and other relevant data.
    • Works with the Special Programs Department and the CAO to develop and implement student health plans.
    • Interprets the health status of students to parents and school personnel.
    • Recommends corrective action where problems are identified.
    • Plans and implements school health management protocols.
    • Provides first aid care and medically prescribed services.
    • Maintains security of school health supplies.
    • Maintains awareness of current research and trends in the school health field and serves as a resource person on health issues for students, parents, faculty, and staff.
    • Assist in the control of communicable diseases and nuisance infestations by interpreting and implementing established policies and procedures.
    • Provides input and guidance in the development of health policies, goals, and objectives for the district.
    • Exercises professional judgment in making decisions.
    • Compile, maintain and file all reports, records and other documents required including accurate, updated records of health information for all students
    • Maintains appropriate confidentiality of student information.
    • Communicates appropriately and effectively with students, parents, administrators, and other school personnel.
    • Demonstrates a genuine interest in the student population and its health needs.
    • Maintains student health records and appropriate clinic sign-in logs and records.
    • Maintains a well-organized clinic.
    • Manage the delivery of all campus health services and ensure consistent implementation of school health policies regarding immunizations, communicable diseases, medication and emergency care of ill and injured students.
    • Coordinate department and district staff development, orientation, training and certification as related to health care needs of students.
    • Understands and complies with all district policies, procedures, and expectations as articulated in the Employee handbook or as communicated by administration.
    • Performs any and all other duties as assigned by the Vice Principal, Principal, and Chief Academic Officer.

    While performing the duties of this job, the employee is regularly required to sit; use hands to grasp, handle, or feel; and talk or hear. The employee is regularly required to stand, walk, and reach with hands and arms. The employee must occasionally lift and /or move up to 25 pounds.

    Requirements
    • Bachelor’s degree in Nursing or related field, Master’s degree preferred.
    • Valid Registered Nurse with current Texas license from Texas Board of Nursing
    • Minimum three years experience as an RN.
    • Certification from the Texas Department of State Health Services for Vision and Hearing Screening.
    • Certification for Scoliosis and Acanthosis training preferred.
    • BLS Healthcare provider/AED/First Aid/CPR certification required
    • Ability to communicate in both English and Spanish preferred.
    • Reliable means of transportation.
