The Board of Adjustment is a quasi-judicial body, which is charged with certain decision making functions which aim to uphold the meaning and spirit of the zoning ordinance as enacted by legislation. The powers of the Board of Adjustment include hearing and deciding special exceptions and variances to zoning ordinances, hearing and deciding appeals from decisions of an administrative official, and regulating and discontinuing nonconforming uses and structures. In rendering a decision, the board may impose reasonable conditions upon the applicant in order to further the purpose and intent of a zoning ordinance. All decisions from the board are final unless appealed to the district court.

 Meetings:
The board is divided into three panels of five members each.  The chair and vice-chairs serve as presiding officers of each panel. 
  1. Panel A usually meets on the third Tuesday of each month with the public hearing starting at 1 p.m..
  2. Panel B usually meets on the third Wednesday of each month with the public hearing starting at 1 p.m.
  3. Panel C usually meets on the third Monday of each month with the public hearing starting at 1 p.m
Briefings usually begin at 11 a.m. with the total time being 3-5 hours each month for the briefing/hearing. An alternate member may serve on any panel at the request of the chair.
