Overall Job Objective


Under the general direction of the Athletic Center Superintendent, or designee, the Aquatic Facilities Technician provides general, routine maintenance and repairs for the department's aquatic facility components. Responsible for repairing and maintaining the aquatic systems including, but not limited to, plumbing system, pumps and motors, filters, chemical feed systems, aquatic structures, interactive water features, etc. 
The intent of this position description is to provide a representative summary of the major duties and responsibilities performed by incumbent(s) in this position. Incumbent(s) may not be required to perform all duties in this description and incumbent(s) may be required to perform position-related tasks other than those specifically listed in this description.

Essential Job Functions & Other Important Duties

  • Monitors, diagnoses, troubleshoots and performs skilled repairs and general maintenance on aquatic chemical systems, pumps and motors, play structures, circulation systems, concrete, tile and plaster, etc.
  • Paints, repairs, and maintains equipment, furniture, facilities and pool playground equipment.
  • Provides technical guidance for supplies, parts and equipment and services requested of contractors for major repairs.
  • Maintains a schedule of routine and preventative maintenance activities.
  • Ensures that work orders are completed in a timely manner and maintains records and reports as required.
  • Inspects, cleans, and maintains equipment and tools in a safe operating order.
  • Resolves maintenance and repair issues in a timely and cost-effective manner, according to industry standards, relevant manufacturer's specifications and in a safe manner.
  • Cleans work sites and performs routine inspections of assigned areas to detect any necessary repairs or hazardous conditions.
  • Completes errands for chemicals and supplies as needed.

Other Important Duties:
  • Will be required to work some evenings and weekends. Will be on call for emergencies.
  • Performs other related duties as assigned.
  • Regular and consistent attendance for the assigned work hours is essential.

Job Requirements

  • Knowledge of the methods, materials and equipment involved in the operation of community swimming pools.
  • Knowledge of practices of operation and preventative maintenance for pumps, suction lines, drains, piping, valves, skimmer basket, flow and control switches of each system.
  • Ability to perform normal pool cleaning services.
  • Knowledge of general maintenance and repair techniques depending on the area of assignment.
  • Knowledge of the operation and maintenance of assigned light equipment, power, and hand tools.
  • Knowledge of safe handling techniques of hazardous chemicals and materials.
  • Knowledge occupational health and safety regulations and procedures.
  • Knowledge of computer software and application
Preferred Education, Experience, and Certifications:
  • High School Diploma or GED and three (3) years' experience in and/or vocational training that includes plumbing, carpentry, building maintenance or equivalent combination of education and experience.
  • Must possess Certified Pool Operator (CPO) or Aquatic Facility Operator (AFO) certification or be able to obtain within six (6) months of employment.
  • Preference given to individuals with 2 years journey level experience in electrical and plumbing.
  • Must pass a pre-employment drug screen, physical agility test, criminal background check, and motor vehicle record check.
  • Must possess a valid Texas Driver's License.

  • Work is performed in an office and field environments.
  • May be subject to exposure to extreme weather conditions, hazardous chemicals, fumes, infectious diseases, toxic waste, air and water borne pathogens, unsafe and unhealthy building conditions, and rough or unstable terrain.
  •  Balancing - maintain equilibrium to prevent falling while walking, standing, or crouching.
  • Climbing - ascending, descending ladders, stairs, ramps, requires body agility.

  • Kneeling - bending legs at knee to come to rest at knees.
  • Lifting - raising objects from lower to higher position, moving objects side to side, using upper extremities, back.
  • Mental Acuity - ability to make rational decisions through sound logic, deductive reasoning.
  • Pulling - use upper extremities to exert force, haul or tug.
  • Pushing - use upper extremities to press against objects with force, or thrust forward, downward, outward.
  • Reaching - extending hands or arms in any direction.
  • Repetitive Motion - substantial movements of wrists, hands, fingers.
  • Speaking - expressing ideas with spoken word, convey detailed, important instructions accurately, concisely.
  • Standing - for sustained periods of time.
  • Stooping - bending body downward, forward at waist, with full motion of lower extremities and back.
  • Talking 1- expressing ideas by spoken word.
  • Talking 2 - shouting to be heard above ambient noise.
  • Visual Acuity 1 - prepare, analyze data, transcribing, computer terminal, extensive reading.
  • Visual Acuity 2 - color, depth perception, field of vision.
  • Visual Acuity 3 - determine accuracy, neatness, observe facilities/structures.
  • Visual Acuity 5 -close acuity for inspection of small defects, machines, use measurement devices, or fabricate parts.
  • Walking - on foot to accomplish tasks, long distances, or site to site.
 Work Environment:      
  • Work performed is primarily heavy work, exerting up to 100 pounds of force occasionally,and/or up to 50 pounds of force frequently, and/or up to 20 pounds of force constantly to move objects.

Equipment and Tools Utilized:
  • Equipment utilized includes: personal computer, cellular phone, copier, calculator, fax machine, other standard office equipment, standard power and hand tools, pager, two-way radio, drills, saws, roto-routers, grinders, furniture movers, hand tools, electrical meters, energy management system, generators, water pump and department vehicles.
