Propose of Position:

This position is responsible for carrier management, development, and procurement of Truckload (TL) and some LTL transportation. The person will have an extensive background in TL procurement, pricing, carrier compliance and management of carriers. He/she is expected to use industry insight to design, develop and resource low cost carrier solutions that meet our' business needs. The manager will act as the primary liaison between Del Monte and transportation providers.


  • Manage, develop, coordinate, and optimize carrier relationships. Classify carriers by role (strategic, niche, etc.) and invest time as appropriate.
  • Develop strategic relationships with key carriers. Lead efforts to develop strong relationships at all levels - executive levels at carrier, execution focused meetings between carrier, regional managers, dispatchers, and Del Monte management (DC and corporate).
  • Identify new carriers to add to the core carrier base or to migrate from non-strategic to strategic roles.
  • Monitor the purchased transportation spend by lane and region assigned.
  • Help create monthly carrier scorecards programmed with IT.
  • Understand customers, ports, DC's operational requirements, and ability to align that with Del Monte/Mann's carrier network.
  • Be responsible for problem resolution between Del Monte and carrier/broker.
  • Identify available capacity for difficult lanes and recommend carriers.
  • Assist in the efforts to confirm committed capacity, negotiate carrier contracts and rates.
  • Link with dispatchers, regional managers, sales, and accounting departments to resolve billing discrepancies and claims.
  • Partner with carriers to implement green initiatives (EPA Smart Way, alternative fuels (CNG / LNG), etc. where opportunities may exist).
  • Provide industry insights and market trends based on developing deep understanding of the North American transportation market.
  • Have frequent interactions with core carrier sales, operations and executive leadership to stay current on existing and emerging trends.
  • Participate as needed in the Del Monte response to RFP's for potential customers by providing detailed information on market trends, sustainability initiatives, carrier management, carrier contracts, and best practices.
  • Assist in the system development of a carrier scorecard, pricing platforms, service, quality, performance, and compliance reporting.
  • Develop subject matter expertise in TL transportation through external research, bench-marking and analyzing cost drivers. Provide market intelligence and price trends.
  • Gather a deep understanding where our risks and opportunities exist.
  • Support, develop, and maintain strategy goals and initiatives through carrier procurement and compliance.
  • Maintain carrier database including carrier profiles and rates.
  • Develop, maintain and administer carrier compliance policies.
  • Support Vice President in planning that promotes business growth and cost savings.
  • Monitor and update Del Monte offices and DC's on key regulatory, judicial and industry issues and decisions that affect the transportation industry.
  • Be a liaison between Del Monte and Mann on 3rd party carrier development and pricing.
  • Assist in developing the Traffic department's budget.
  • Support sales team on new sales opportunities and quantifying & developing quality carriers.
  • Review, update and maintain standard operating procedures (SOP's).
  • Maintain department reports.
  • Problem-solve issues relating to carrier on-boarding and procurement.
  • Complete other duties as required by business needs or as assigned.

Minimum Skills Required:

  • Bachelor Degree in Business, Logistics, Transportation or other related field from an accredited institution.
  • 2+ year's proven experience with rate negotiations, carrier contracting and transportation.
  • Strong leadership, planning and organizing skills.
  • Analytical and problem resolution skills.
  • Proficiency in Microsoft Office (Word, Excel, Access and PowerPoint).
  • Ability to manage multiple projects simultaneously.
  • Knowledge and understanding of Transportation Management Systems.
