Job Description

At Bell, thinking aboveand beyond is what we do best. For more than 80 years, we've been reimaginingthe experience of flight – and where it can take us.

We are pioneers. We werethe first to break the sound barrier and to certify a commercial helicopter. Wewere aboard NASA's first lunar mission and brought advanced tiltrotor systemsto market. And today, we're defining the future of on demand mobility.

Position Overview

The Trade ClassificationSpecialist is a hybrid Legal/Engineering function where the successfulapplicant will play a critical role in ensuring Bell complies with globalexport and import control laws.  These trade compliance laws arevital to our national security and technological and economic advantage.

The basis for all exportcompliance programs is the export classification of the items or technologiesthe company wants to sell or share with foreign parties.  Likewise, the import classification of items determines whether they can be imported intothe country, and if so, what legal requirements they carry with them, and howmuch duty Customs with collect.

Export and importclassification is based on what function the item performs, what it goes into(an aircraft?  an oil pump?  an engine?), what material itis made of, dimensions, weights of specific ingredients, as well as many otherfactors.  To determine the classification, you must be able to readand understand complex legal regulations and apply those regulations to productspecifications, engineering drawings, etc.  Details matter and canmake all the difference between an export classification for which a license isrequired, and one which may be exported to customers in all countries (except thosesubject to a complete economic embargo).  Even punctuationmatters!  If you enjoy gathering clues and using logic to solvepuzzles, that's really what this job entails.  But you'll also needto be able to explain in writing how you arrived at your conclusion for recordkeeping and auditing purposes – so written communication skills are importanttoo.

In the process ofgathering facts to determine classifications, you will work with virtuallyevery function within Bell – engineering, supply chain management, programmanagement, sales, customer support, and legal.  And you will workwith people at all Bell sites globally.  Timely and accurateclassification is critical to Bell's mission.  We can't ship parts toour customers overseas without determining the correct classificationfirst.  We can't share engineering specs with our foreign suppliersuntil we know what the classification is, so we can determine if we need anexport license, or if the export licenses we have authorize us to share thedata with the recipient.  We can't collaborate with innovationpartners without understanding what it is we're discussing and how it'scontrolled.

ResponsibilitiesMay Include:

  • Apply export/import lawsand regulations to accurately assign export/import classifications to Bellproducts and technologies.
  • Document theclassification analysis performed for record keeping and audit purposes.
  • Attend and observeprogram meetings to gather additional facts and set priorities.
  • Maintain a positive workenvironment and actively cooperate with internal and external customers.
  • Other duties asassigned.

  • Bachelor's (4 year)degree required.
  • 3.0 minimum overall, undergraduate GPA.
  • Applicants will be askedto complete a competency based assessment. Only those who pass the assessmentmay be selected to interview for this position.

Ideal CandidatesAlso Have:

  • Experience classifyingitems under the Export Administration Regulations (EAR) and/or theInternational Traffic in Arms Regulations (ITAR).
  • Proficiency withMicrosoft Office products, CATIA, BEDVUe, SharePoint, and ENOVIA.

Collaborate with dedicated, enthusiastic teams where differences in experiences, backgrounds, and ideascombined with a strong passion for our products take us above and beyondflight.
