Job Description

The Summer Learning Academy (SLA) program Teacher is responsible for planning, implementing and leading the educational activities of the SLA program under the supervision of the SLA program Site Director. The SLA program Teacher guides the academic and social development of children ensuring a safe, enriching, and healthy learning environment that promotes progress and learning.
The SLA program Teacher must have the competencies, skills, and proven leadership ability to successfully carry out the YMCA mission, goals, and visions for serving the community. The SLA program Teacher will be responsible for the following:
1. Prepare lesson plans for Math and Literacy activities.
2. Work with the site director to administer the pre- and post- reading and math assessments.
3. Attend all required trainings and staff meetings.
4. Instruct and facilitate lesson plans and activities and lead classroom according to the program outline and quality requirements.
5. Ensure 1:10 ratio is maintained throughout the literacy and math portion of the day.
6. Proactively manage classroom behavior.
7. Differentiate instruction to meet the individual needs of students (e.g. inclusion accommodations, language strategies).
8. Monitor and report to Site Director weekly attendance, student progress and behavior issues to site director.
9. Assist the site director with planning and attend the parent/caregiver workshops as needed.
10. Work with volunteers and community partners, as needed.
11. Set up classroom according to weekly theme to create a stimulating learning environment.
12. Set up for and clean up after all classroom activities.
13. Take care of school property (e.g., space, equipment, supplies) daily.
14. Collaborate with enrichment leaders to ensure literacy and math instruction is aligned with enrichment activities.
15. Assist Site Director in other duties as assigned.
16. Uphold and exemplify the YMCA’s Core Values and principles of Character Development.
17. Reports incidents to site director and manages incident or behavior issues with children.


1. Bachelor’s degree required.
2. Current State teaching certification.
3. A minimum of two years’ teaching experience in an early childhood or elementary education.
4. Exceptional group management, problem-solving and conflict resolution skills.
5. Experience in planning and delivering reading instruction.
6. Must possess speaking, listening and writing, skills appropriate for interacting with both children and adults.
7. Must have flexibility and the ability to adapt to changing circumstances.
8. Demonstrate a working knowledge of YMCA mission, purpose and goals, childcare policies and YMCA standards; ensures the program meets the highest standards of excellence.
